Interesting Thought of The Day
Who is researching the intersection between economics and social networks?
I’m quite serious, someone has gotta be doing this, it’s like “duh,” and thanks to Ian for phrasing it this way. So if you know of research on this topic, please contact me. I probably want to read all of it.
Yeah, ok. Sometimes I’m just geeky. Leave me alone. All of my relationships are long-distance right now and I’d probably cry if you made fun of me.

got no research to point to, but it would be interesting to include both normal and gray and black market economics. Since we are mostly dealing with people who know each other, we are representing the ties between people who share, sell at reduced prices, and sometimes engage in illegal transactions.

I don’t know anyone doing straight-up economics, but I can point at a few who do transportation & social networks:
Barry Wellman
Juan Carrasco
Steven Farber

Yes. Classical “village” economies, or co-ops of various types also fall into this category. One of the things which fascinates me most is the idea of socially-based redistributive mechanisms, and in what sorts of situations this does and does not work.
In other words, I think this might be way to get away from the “individual rational agent” strand of thought that so much of classical economic theory is based on.
